We all remember it – Mam’s advice that a snack before bedtime is a huge no-no.

Turns out, that’s absolute rubbish.

Some clever dieticians at TIME mag have revealed that a cheeky snack before bed can actually be good for you. The science? A little pre-snooze snack keeps your blood sugar in shape.

Stephanie Maxson, who probably loves a slice of toast before bed, points out that low blood sugar can wake you up in the middle of the night. This leads to a feeling we know all too well – that tired, sluggish one that means you can’t get out of bed. Absolutely rubbish. Who knew that food could fix that?

Next, dietitian Cassie Bjork – who we think loves a rich tea biscuit and a lie down. Bjork insists that having food in your stomach before a snooze stops releasing certain hormones. These are the hunger hormones tell your body to store fat. Science!

However, it’s not as amazing as it sounds. Anything that causes a blood sugar spike followed won’t do you any good – meaning the best stuff is off the menu. No pizza and ice cream before bed. It’s okay, we’re gutted too.

So, now you know. Next time you’re thinking about a piece of toast before bed, get stuck in. You’ll sleep easier.
