Food For Thought

Exam time is the most stressful period of the academic year, and for many deciding what they eat is less of a priority than hitting the revision books.

Revision time is precious for students, meaning nutrition often slides down the priority list. However, what you eat is as important as what you study, according to nutritionist Ruth Tongue, so the right nutrition from food can boost brainpower and prepare students for the mental marathon.

Nutritionist Ruth Tongue says: “Late nights and stress can play havoc on concentration and focus when cramming for exams, so it’s important to eat regular meals for basic brain fuel. A surprising amount of our favourite takeaway meals contain ingredients that can help boost brainpower and help aid learning at the same time.”

Check out Ruth’s guide to the best brain-boosting food and order your study fuel on Just Eat!

Eat meals rich in turmeric like Chicken Tikka Masala

Turmeric, the key spice in a <a tabindex="21"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/indian/" title="Order Indian Takeaway">Chicken Tikka Masala, is arguably one of the most powerful medicinal herbs on the planet. Studies have found that the compound curcumin in turmeric, could help increase the growth of brain cells by as much as 80%.

Get a boost with Fiorentina Pizza

Toppings on a Fiorentina pizza include folic acid-rich spinach and nutrient dense eggs. Keeping folic acid levels high with dark green leafy veg such as spinach can help avoid mental sluggishness. Similarly, olives, capers and anchovies found on a Napoletana <a tabindex="22"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/pizza/" title="Order Pizza Takeaway">pizza, contain high levels of polyphenols associated with increased cognitive function.

Whole grains and pulses like Indian Dal

The brain uses about 20% of the body’s total energy, so having a steady supply of energy will help boost concentration and focus. Whole-grains and pulses such as lentils have a low-GI, which help to stabilise blood sugar levels and provide a slow release of energy to the brain. <a tabindex="23"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/indian/" title="Order Indian Takeaway">Indian meals are packed with all the goodness of whole grain and pulses.

The importance of Egg Fried Rice

Eggs are one of the best protein-rich foods for improving memory, thanks to its yolk which contains essential nutrient choline. A recent study by Boston University tracked the eating habits of nearly 1,400 healthy adults for 10 years and found that choline intake correlated positively with better performance on certain types of memory tests. Making the <a tabindex="24"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/chinese/" title="Order Chinese Takeaway">Egg Fried Rice dish a real brain performance optimiser.

Add Omega-3 to your diet with a Salmon Teriyaki

Salmon is an oily fish packed full of the brain-friendly omega-3 fatty acids known as DHA. DHA is one of the main structural components of the brain and as such plays an essential role in learning and memory. Studies have also shown that people with high levels of DHA are less likely to suffer from depression. <a tabindex="25"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/japanese/" title="Order Japanese Takeaway">Salmon Teriyaki is packed full of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Get a lift with Falafel

The main ingredient found in <a tabindex="26"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/middle-eastern/" title="Order Middle Eastern Takeaway">falafels are chickpeas – not only are they a great source of protein and slow-releasing carbohydrates but they are also high in magnesium, which helps to speed up the rate at which messages are transmitted to the brain.

Chicken Burrito – with extra guacamole

Chicken is a source of the amino acid tryptophan which helps to produce serotonin. Higher levels of serotonin can improve learning, particularly when the brain is under stress such as at exam time. Guacamole, made using the humble avocado, is packed with healthy monounsaturated fats, which can increase blood flow around the body, including the brain, making the <a tabindex="27"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/mexican/" title="Order Mexican Takeaway">Chicken Burrito a learning feast.

Satay King Prawns

Prawns are a good source of protein, required by the brain to produce the neurotransmitters that transmit information to the brain – essential for revision. This is complimented by the <a tabindex="28"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/takeaways/chinese/" title="Order Chinese Takeaway">satay sauce rich in peanuts, which are high in the brain-boosting antioxidant Vitamin E, crucial for neuronal health

Did you know that this New Year celebration isn’t just a part of Chinese culture but widely celebrated throughout Asia and India with a variety of celebrations? I have fortunately traveled throughout Thailand, Vietnam, India and Taiwan witnessing first-hand how food is embedded in Asian and Indian life and culture. The hustle and bustle of their food markets, the melting pots of street food vendors and the brilliant chaos of heaving tables of set dinner menus are a sight to behold. For this review I have then decided to showcase some of the forgotten Asian and Indian cuisines of the world.

Winter is <del>coming</del> finally over, and Game of Thrones Season 6 is here! Ever wondered what takeaway you would order if you sat in the Seven Kingdoms? Are you a fiery Targaryen? Or perhaps your dinner-of-choice would banish you to The Wall for eternity? Check out what house belongs to what takeaway!

House of Lannister – Takeaway of choice: Chinese

A Lanni-stir-fry is the ideal dish for any Lannister. While Tyrion enjoys his Duck Pancakes, Jamie and Cersei love sharing a 2 in 1.

House of Stark – Takeaway of choice: Indian

When it comes to a rollicking medieval feast, the Starks are always looking for a lot of delicious bone-in meat that you eat with your hands. Tandoori Chicken is the perfect meal. Or an extra hot vindaloo to warm up in Winterfell!

House of Greyjoy – Takeaway of choice: Sushi

Sashimi, Maki rolls and Nigiri are the takeaway of choice in the Iron Islands. After all, Theon’s house motto is “We do Miso”.

House of Targaryen – Takeaway of choice: BBQ

Straight from Drogon’s mouth, Daenery’s takeaway of choice BBQ burgers, hot hot hot wings and all things chargrilled.

Having a quiet night in and can’t agree whether to order a Green Curry or Pepperoni Pizza? Or having a few friends around and you can’t decide between Wings and Pad Thai?

These are the kind of situations that make or break relationships. Luckily, the <a tabindex="66"" href="//www.just-eat.ie/apps">JUST EAT app puts a world of takeaway in your hand.

With so many takeaways to choose from why settle for just one? Pull up your local Chinese and order chicken balls for starters, meanwhile your other half is getting a korma from your favourite Indian and your best mate is swiping through the menu for the Mexican restaurant down the street, ordering sides to beat the band. Then you can sit back and wait for your culinary world tour to arrive.

Why not try?

Honey Spare Ribs, Chicken Biriyani, Crispy Wontons & Saag Aloo on the side

A spicy, saucy mix. Kick your feast off with some sweet honey ribs, balanced with the dry and spicy heat of a biryani. Pair off light crispy wontons with hearty saag aloo and your bound to please everyone with this asian pick and mix!

California Rolls and a Caesar Salad

Sharing a romantic meal for two? Don’t let a food fight ruin your date night. Mix and match some sushi with a caesar salad for a perfect pairing. You can feed each other sushi rolls to your heart’s content without putting other diners off their dinner. Guilt-free goodness.

Pizza, Chicken Wings, Sweet Potato Fries

Nothing turns friends into frenemies like a bout of hanger. Feed your friends and Shhh The Hunger by ordering a buffet style feast and putting a smile on everyone’s face. Whether they’re over for a movie, a match or just a catch up, take it to the next level with a finger food extravaganva!

The Hateful Eight

Quentin Tarantino’s sprawling, bloody three-hour Western charts the nasty business perpetrated by a group of strangers (including Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Tim Roth and Michael Madsen) who all converge during a blizzard at a remote cabin.
