Thai cuisine is one of the most renowned in the world. A core principal of Thai food is the balance of five flavours which are spicy, salty, sweet, sour and bitter.

Ordering a stir-fry or a soup makes for an excellent healthy takeaway choice, often with paleo and gluten-free options. Plus, by adding nuts (like cashews and peanuts) it’s a super easy way to boost your intake of superfoods and a variety of vegetables.

When ordering a Thai takeaway, you’ll also find a wealth of healthy options waiting to be discovered. Take a look at some of our favourite dishes and order tonight on JUST EAT!

1. Pok Pok

If you want to experience the core flavours of Thai food in one easy sitting, this is the dish for you and the good news is that it’s perfect for the calorie conscious. Prawns and lime juice vie for attention with hot chilli, fresh mint and coriander making this a quintessential Thai dish.

2. Thai Green Curry

thai green curry

Thailand is famous for its colourful curries, however do not let green deceive you. It’s just as spicy as its red curry cousin, as well as having a fragrant and tasty sweetness that you won’t find in many curries.

Made with a punchy paste of green Thai herbs including green chillies, garlic, shallots, cumin and basil; the paste is mixed with coconut milk and in general is more soupy than Indian curries. Fantastic with sticky rice to soak up that gorgeous sweet and spicy sauce.

3. Pad Thai Noodles

Shake your taste buds awake with a bowl of Pad Thai. Originally popularised during the 1940s (an attempt to reduce rice consumption in Thailand so more could be exported), the dish became a firm favourite and has become one of Thailand’s best loved dishes.

A zingy mix of noodles, peanuts and prawns (though chicken, bean sprouts and tofu can sometimes make an appearance – the ingredients are guidelines rather than rules!) this is a noodle dish you’ll keep coming back to.

4. Tom Yum Soup

tom yum soup

This soup-based dish is low in both calories and fat. You’ll see it as both a starter, where it’s a simple but tasty soup, and as a main dish, where it’s bulked up and made more filling with noodles. It has a classic hot and sour flavour.

This flavour-combo comes thanks to tamarind and lime juice (sour), chillies (hot), palm sugar (sweet) and fish sauce (salty). The other classic tom yum ingredients are lemon grass and kaffir lime leaves, which give it that unmistakeable Thai flavour.

5. Panang Curry

This Thai takeaway is fried rather than boiled which makes something looking more like the sort of sauce-heavy dish you’d expect in India rather than the usual Thai dishes.

Typically made with beef, the intense, spicy sauce is seasoned with sliced lime leaves, and made a little milder and creamier with coconut. There are also usually peanuts in the curry paste.

6. Massaman Curry

massaman curry

Massaman Curry, also called kaeng matsaman or gaeng masaman is an irresistible southern Thai takeaway. This Thai curry is mainly made with beef, but pork, lamb, chicken or tofu could also find their way into the medium sauce.

Travellers from the Middle East and India brought cumin, cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg to the party, giving this takeaway a fantastic fusion flavour!

7. Yam Nua Yang

thai beef salad

Yam Nua Yang is a Thai grilled beef salad – a perfectly light and paleo friendly dish with a touch of spice to make a perfect starter or light main course.

Mint, lemongrass, chilli, garlic and lime add flavour to the beef with a salad base of cucumber, tomatoes and cabbage in many versions.

If you’re looking for a light alternative to the traditional Thai curries, then this tangy salad is a good way to go.
