Just-Eat.com, Europe’s largest online takeaway ordering service today announced that it has acquired a majority shareholding in Hungry Zone, India’s leading online food ordering and restaurant table reservation platform. Just-Eat.com will invest US$ 5-10 million over the coming years into this joint venture.

Just-Eat.ie, the Irish operation of Just-Eat.com has been established since 2008. It now has over 600 restaurants online and uses proprietary technology to offer a seamless on-line ordering service.

“This type of investment into Asia clearly demonstrates the group’s ambitions to build and develop the Just-Eat brand outside of Europe and North America. India is fast developing as a serious economic player, and it makes complete sense to tap into such a huge and emerging market with a product like ours. Every Just-Eat country including Ireland, is massively excited about the opportunities this deal will offer.” said the MD Just-Eat Ireland.

Founded in July 2006 and headquartered in Bangalore, India, Hungry Zone enables its customers to place online home delivery orders with over 650 restaurants serving over 40 different cuisines.

This deal is the first major investment of its kind where European e-commerce has invested in this sector in India. It will provide a strong foundation for the joint venture to expand into all Indian metropolitan cities, starting with Mumbai and Delhi shortly.
