I often get asked by people ‘what is affiliate marketing’? I decided to write this blog post to explain it in layman terms.  Affiliate Marketing is an Internet-based marketing practice in which a business rewards affiliates for each visitor or customer brought about by the affiliate’s marketing efforts. In other words website owner pay someone (an affiliate) to get them traffic to their site in the hope that it will convert into a sale. Affiliate marketing  is somewhat different to ‘Cost Per Mille’ (CPM)’ as it is not based on impressions, it is based on a CPA – (Cost Per Acquisition) model. Therefore if you have an affiliate signed up to your affiliate programme and they are not delivering revenue to you as a merchant do not have to pay them anything.

Is it easy to make money as an affiliate? Yes, sometimes – depending on how astute the affiliate is with online marketing. In order for me to fully understand affiliate marketing I signed up to TradeDoubler.ie Affiliate Marketing and created a account and started affiliate marketing, at first I thought ‘I am going to get rich fast doing this’ which sadly I didn’t but I am making money now after a good few months. Affiliate marketing requires time, patience and most of all tweaking to make it work.  As an affiliate you have to choose the programme that will work in tandem with your website.

Do people make money? Yes they do, affiliates can make more than a monthly salary by engaging in affiliate marketing but you have to remain committed to making it work!
